Both Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools now report AI impressions and citations for websites. AI mentions can be tracked in three layers that include platform reports, analytics referrals, and a manual prompt log.

GA4 often groups visits from AI assistants into a single channel. Conducting a monthly prompt test shows what ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity says about you. No single tool is equipped to cover all three layers.

OpenAI’s publisher guidance points to analytics referral tracking rather than a citation dashboard. This guide is written to take you through the setup for each layer.

Why is Tracking AI Mentions Important for an Indian Brand?

Buyers can now ask an AI tool for a shortlist before contacting anyone. AI summaries were offered for 18% of US Google searches in March 2025, and Google has since extended AI Mode to Hindi and seven further Indian languages.

If your brand is not covered under associated links for those answers, you lose a place on the shortlist even though your rankings remain the same. By tracking AI impressions, business can turn a blind spot into a metric to be improved.

Why Is Tracking AI Mentions Different from Tracking Rankings?

A ranking is a position anyone on the internet can check. An AI answer is uniquely generated for each asker, so two people can see different results for the same question.

Visibility and visits also separate metrics. Pew found that users who saw a Google AI summary clicked a link inside it in 1% of visits, and ended their browsing session on 26% of pages, against 16% for pages without a summary.

Mention, Citation, and Referral: What Each Means

  • Mention: the answer names your brand in text, with or without a link.
  • Citation: the answer lists your page as a source.
  • Referral: a user clicks through and your analytics records the visit.

All three must be reported separately, since they each need a different tool. A brand with many mentions and few citations has awareness but weak source pages.

Layer Tool What it measures Limitation
Platform report Search Console Generative AI report Impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode Centres on impressions, not answer wording
Platform report Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance Citations, cited pages, grounding queries Does not show placement or ranking
Analytics GA4 AI assistants channel Visits from assistants such as ChatGPT Misses answers read without a click
Manual Prompt audit log Mentions, citations, accuracy, competitors A sample only; answers vary by run

What Can Google Search Console Tell You About AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Search Console’s Generative AI performance report reached all websites worldwide on 31 August 2026. It covers AI Overviews and AI Mode on Google Search. The report contained information about the following:

  • Impressions: how often links to your site appeared in a generative AI feature.
  • Pages: which URLs earn the most and fewest impressions.
  • Countries, devices and dates: where and when those impressions come from.
  • Search type: text-based web searches versus multimodal searches such as Google Lens.

To read this report, set the filer to “India” to check Indian impressions. Sort these pages by the number of impressions, and then compare the list to the pages that want to be known for. Copy the data, recording the specifics for every month, and note every update to track progress.

The report centres on impressions rather than the wording of the generated answer, so it cannot tell you whether an answer described you accurately.

What Does Bing Webmaster Tools Show About Copilot Citations?

Microsoft launched AI Performance in Bing Webmaster Tools as a public preview on 10 February 2026. It reports when a site is cited in Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations, covering the following details:

  • Total citations in the selected period.
  • Average cited pages per day.
  • Grounding queries: a sample of the phrases the AI used to retrieve your content.
  • Page-level citation counts for individual URLs.
  • A timeline of citation trends.

These figures do not indicate placement, ranking or a page’s role in an individual answer. Pair Bing’s grounding queries with your Search Console queries. Where both tools show a topic, two engines already associate a page with it. Where only one does, check whether the other engine can reach and index the page.

How Do You Track ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity Visits in GA4?

OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it sends to publishers, and that sites must not block OAI-SearchBot if they want content in ChatGPT search summaries and snippets. Check your robots.txt first. A blocked crawler leaves nothing to track.

Google’s Analytics Help gives a ready example for grouping AI traffic. Set it up as follows:

  1. In GA4, open Admin, then Channel groups, and create a new channel group.
  2. Add a channel named AI assistants.
  3. Add a condition where Source matches regex, and paste the expression from Google’s help page, which covers ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Claude and Perplexity.
  4. Drag the channel above Referrals so matching traffic lands in it first.
  5. Open Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition, and select the new group as the dimension.

Custom channel groups apply to past data, so you will see history straight away. Update the regex whenever a new assistant appears, and review the list each quarter.

GA4 tends to undercount AI influence since visits that never click leave no session. In Traffic acquisition, compare engaged sessions and key events for AI assistants against organic search.

How Do You Run a Manual Prompt Audit?

A prompt audit shows how each assistant describes you today. Run it monthly and keep the log in a sheet. Rotate a few new prompts in each quarter, but keep a fixed core of twenty so month-on-month comparisons stay fair.

To find real prompts, check the following:

  • Your longest Search Console queries.
  • Questions your sales team hears on calls and in WhatsApp chats.
  • Bing grounding queries, which show how an AI rephrased questions before fetching your pages.
  • Questions that arrive through your enquiry forms.

Build the prompt set by covering the following:

  • Brand prompts: What does [brand] do? Is [brand] a good choice?
  • Category prompts: best digital marketing agency in Kolkata, or whichever service-and-city question your buyers ask.
  • Comparison prompts: [brand] versus [competitor].
  • Problem prompts: how do I get my business into Google AI Overviews?
  • Language prompts: the same questions in Hindi and Bengali.

To run the test, use a signed-out browser window or a clean profile. Ask each prompt three times in each tool, because answers vary between runs. Record the date, tool, prompt, whether you were mentioned, whether you were cited, the other brands named and whether the facts about you were correct.

Calculate mention rate, i.e., the number of runs that name you divided by total runs. Track it for each tool and prompt group.

How Should You Interpret a Mention?

A mention is only helpful if it is accurate. For each run, check three things: whether the facts match your website, whether the answer cites your page or a third-party listing, and whether a competitor takes the recommendation.

Wrong facts often trace to an outdated page or directory entry, so fix the source and then retest. A correct mention with no citation tells you the brand is known but your page is not the source, which points to a content gap.

Are Paid AI Visibility Tools Helpful?

Paid AI visibility tools can save time on repeat prompts. However, treat their scores as samples, because Google warns that no third-party tool can see its internal ranking or AI systems. Before paying, check that the tool:

  • Lets you edit the prompt list, including Hindi and Bengali prompts.
  • Supports India as a location.
  • Shows the raw answer text, not only a score.
  • States how often it reruns each prompt.

What Should You Do When AI Tools Do Not Mention You?

In case your AI impressions are zero or way too low, do the following:

  1. Check that the page is indexed in Google and Bing and that OAI-SearchBot can reach it.
  2. Compare your page with the sources the AI cited. Look for original data, named authors and direct answers you lack.
  3. Add what is missing, update the date and request a recrawl.
  4. Confirm your business details match across directories.
  5. Retest after four weeks, using the same prompts.

Which Mistakes Skew AI Mention Tracking?

The following mistakes can lead to people misinterpreting AI Mention tracking:

  • Testing a prompt once and treating the result as fact.
  • Running prompts while signed in, which can personalise answers.
  • Using only English prompts for a customer base that searches in Hindi or Bengali.
  • Counting a mention without checking whether the facts are right.
  • Comparing tool scores without reading the raw answers behind them.
  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot and then wondering why ChatGPT never cites you.

What Should a Monthly AI Visibility Report Include?

A monthly AI visibility report should contain the following:

  • Search Console: AI impressions for the top ten pages, with the change on last month.
  • Bing Webmaster Tools: total citations and the five most cited pages.
  • GA4: sessions, engaged sessions and key events from the AI assistants channel.
  • Prompt audit: mention rate by tool and by prompt group.
  • Accuracy log: wrong facts found and the fix applied.
  • Actions: pages updated this month and pages planned for next month.

Wrapping Up: How to Turn AI Mention Tracking Into a 30-Minute Routine?

For the first 10 minutes, review the Search Console Generative AI report for page-level changes. In the next 5 minutes, check Bing AI Performance for cited pages and new grounding queries. Then, take 5 minutes to scan the GA4 AI assistants channel.

In the last 10 minutes, run five prompts from your set and add them to the log. Block the same 30-minutes slot every week to maintain reporting consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Can’t I See the Generative AI Performance Report in Search Console?

Google says this usually means your site has not yet received enough impressions in generative AI features. Excluding your site from those features can also hide the report, so check that the setting still includes you.

Which Time Zone and Data Limits Does the Search Console AI Report Use?

Dates in the report use Pacific Time. The usual Search performance limits apply, including a 1,000-row cap in tables, and data from Search Labs experiments is excluded. Totals in the chart and table can differ because they aggregate data differently.

Does Blocking Gptbot Stop ChatGPT From Citing My Website?

Not on its own. OpenAI says to disallow GPTBot for content you want excluded from training, and to avoid blocking OAI-SearchBot if you want pages included in ChatGPT search summaries and snippets. The two crawlers have separate purposes.

How Many Custom Channel Groups Can I Create in GA4?

Standard GA4 properties allow two custom channel groups in addition to the predefined group, with up to 50 channels in each. Google Analytics 360 properties allow five. Use one group for AI assistants and keep the other for campaign reporting.
